Tellurite Glasses containing Bi2O3 for Radiation Shielding
Keywords:

Glass is an essential component of numerous products that being used in everyday life. Some of them, most often unnoticedly, have been used to protect from the UV light. However, protection from other radiation is still a major issue. Tellurite based glass composed of 70TeO2-xBi2O3-(30-x)PbO where x = 0; 2.5; 5; 7.5; 10; 12.5 and 15 mol% has successfully been made and their absorption characteristic and gamma absorption energy have been determined. It is found that both UV edge absorptions are red shifted and gamma absorption increases as Bi2O3 content is systematically increased. These results indicate that some wavelengths have been filtered and these glasses may have some potential usage as a radiation shielding glass.
